The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean and centers on a man, Edmond Dantès who is falsely accused of treason, arrested and imprisoned in the Château d'lf, a grim fortress off the coast of Marseille.

The story tells of Edmond escape from imprisonment, his acquisition of a fortune, and his revenge on those responsible for his demise.
