Samedi Voodoo Playing Cards

The Samedi Deck is a custom set of handcrafted playing cards homegrown in the US of A and printed by the USPCC. In celebration of Voodoo culture and Baron Samedi, the Voodoo Loa (god) of the Dead, the Samedi deck goes beyond the pop culture version of Voodoo that is commonly encountered. Instead, it presents a unique aesthetic drawn from the long tradition of Voodoo imagery, beliefs, and culture, honoring those gods and goddesses which are not readily known in western society. The completed deck embodies a sleek, minimalist style that strikes a balance between modern sensibilities and classical designs.

Baron Samedi (Baron Saturday, in English), also translated as Baron Samdi, Bawon Samedi, or Bawon Sanmdi, is the chief Loa (god) of Haitian Voodoo (Vodou) and God of the Dead. As head of the Guédé Family, he is frequently associated with disruption, debauchery, obscenity, and is the only being who can accept an individual into the realm of the dead.

In Haitian Voodoo, The Baron appears in four personas: Baron Samedi, Baron Cimetière, Baron La Croix, and Baron Kriminel. Below the Barons are the other Loa: spirits, “mystères,” or “the invisibles,” each with his or her own fondnesses and proclivities.
