Different Red Bicycle Playing Cards

A July 2018 Pip Box Club Selection - For more information on joining Pip Box Club click here.

At first sight the Different Deck is a standard deck of 54 playing cards with one major difference -  each card is inverted so instead of a 3 of clubs, you have a club of 3s.

Instead of a 5 of diamonds, it is a diamond made up of 5s and so on.

Each card is a unique piece of art filled with symbolism and hidden elements. If you look closely at the queen of spades you will see "queen" not only written in several languages, but you will find a queen chess piece and even a Queen Elizabeth signature.

Over 7 years to develop.

Very Different!

This deck is very artistic in how they represent each value and suit. The art style is represented in what I guess could be described as "Word Cloud." Each card is shown a suit that is made up of its value. So if it's a Three of Hearts, then the card would show a shape of a heart that is made up of variations of 3, whether it's letters, numbers, or symbols. The court cards show a tiny cross section of the recognizable court cards. It's fun that the deck comes with ad cards that function as a mini scavenger hunt. Definitely something to check out!

Different is good!

This deck is absolutely bizarre, and I mean that in a good way. I can't completely give a complete description of the deck, because each and every card is completely and independently designed apart from the other. Let's start with some quick basics. Nice back design, somewhat standard, but slightly more embellished than a run of the mill deck. Each card has standard fonts and pips for the corner indexes. Each card also has one giant pip at the center of the card. However, this is where the similarities end. I'll pull a couple cards out of the deck to use as an example. Looking, for instance, at the ten of hearts, we see a single giant heart pip at center. However, inside of that heart pip is the number "10", the word "ten" written in at least three different languages, a small clock displaying the time at 10:00, and so on. So in actuality, you don't have a "ten of hearts", you have a "heart of tens", if you will. This theme carries on thru the entire deck. There's no outstanding artwork or metallic inks or magnificent embellishments, but they aren't needed. You have to get your hands on this deck and carefully examine it card by card to truly appreciate the amount of thought and effort went into this. Two full sized jokers are also included (a side profile of a jester) with the same type of theme used in them. Remarkably thoughtful.
