Tarot Card Meanings with Infographic: Four of Pentacles

(The above image is a copy of The Four of Pentacles card in a standard Rider-Waite Tarot deck. The 4 symbols pointed out above are explained below.)

Card Description

While the pentacles suit celebrates the material world, it acknowledges the folly of hyperbolic devotion in the Four of Pentacles. In the card, a self-described king hoards his pentacles from the town behind him. While the man has what he wants, he is all alone. The card suggests that in order to celebrate material possessions, you must have friends and family to celebrate them with.

Point 1 – FIGURE

The solitary figure in the Four of Pentacles stoops over one of his pentacles while he wears the other three. The figure’s body language suggests that he his closed off to the rest of the world. In making material things his sole priority, the figure loses everything else.

Point 2 – CROWN

The figure wears a crown however, instead of illustrating his authority, the crown illustrates the figure’s hollowness. He is the king of nobody. A miser that has everything in the world except friends, family, or community. His crown warns against the alure of power.

Point 3 – PENTACLES

The pentacles themselves illustrate the man’s rampant materialism. This is the only card in which they are worn by a figure. In every other card, they are either held or in the background. This reveals the necessity to have other things in your life besides material possessions.

Point 4 – TOWN

The town in the background illustrates the figure’s loneliness. The figure might wear a crown, but people are his last priority. The figure wants authority for authority’s sake rather than authority for the sake of leading others to a better tomorrow. The card encourages us to pass this figure and run towards the town he has abandoned.

Tarot Reading

Upright

An Upright Four of Pentacles warns that you are putting too much emphasis on money and material possessions. Money is only good as a means to a justifiable end; it should never be an end in of itself. An Upright Four of Pentacles asks you to seriously evaluate your thoughts towards money. If your desire for money is affecting your relationship then it is time to realign your priorities.

Reverse

A Reverse Four of Pentacles suggests that you are currently in the process of evaluating your relationship towards money. Perhaps you have recently felt unsatisfied with life and are wondering way. Shifting focus away from material possessions and towards family and friends can be the remedy you need. A Reverse Four of Pentacles encourages you to continue evaluating your doubt about money.
