Bharata Playing Cards evoke the kings, queens and warriors from the stories of the Mahabharata, the epic poem from the country of Bharata, true name of India. Done in collaboration with one of the top Indian illustrators Ishan Trivedi, the court cards depict the King, Queen and Jack in the style of Kishangarh paintings.

For those unacquainted with Kishangarh painting, it emerged as a distinctive style in the middle of 18th century under the patronage of Maharaja Sawant Singh. Nihal Chand, a gifted artist in the Maharaja's court, produced some highly individualistic Radha and sophisticated works. The chief characteristics of the Kishengarh paintings were the elongation of human faces, lavish use of green and depiction of panoramic landscapes. Portrayal of Radha and Krishna in elongated faces is a common subject of Kishangarh paintings. The elongated neck, the long stylized eyes with drooping eyelids, the thin lips and pointed chin of Radha standing in a graceful pose with her head covered with a muslin odhni, is undoubtedly the most striking creation of the Kishangarh school.

The charming Indian folk art of the Bharata Playing Cards series

This Series 2 deck is a follow-up to the original Bharata Playing Cards produced in 2017. It has a glamorous new tuck box that utilizes silver foil and embossing on a black background, new artwork on the card backs, and dispenses with the gold gilded edges, since it is intended to be a more workmanlike deck geared for normal use.

I absolutely love the card backs. There is simple circular design that is immediately memorable, yet within this there's incredible detail, including patterned flowers and swan-like figures. And the colours - I am just smitten by the rich combination of reds, blues and purples, which come together in a palette that feels warm and luxurious without being overpowering. Outstanding!

The court cards are another favourite part of this deck. Inside a lush oval border (a different colour for each suit) are figures with a charming style of artwork that immediately sets this deck apart from a normal deck. The enchanting characters have been depicted as part of the Indian royalty, and look as if they have stepped straight from the pages of the classic Tales of the Arabian Nights.

This deck is printed in China by a company called WJPC, and the quality doesn't quite match the higher standards of USPCC produced decks. But the cards are embossed and shuffle smoothly, so the handling quality is still decent, and satisfactory for a collectable deckm, and should prove more than adequate for playing card games. - BoardGameGeek reviewer EndersGame
